We are recruiting a skilled and enthusiastic GP Phlebotomist to work alongside our existing nursing team, they will need to hit the ground running and be up for the challenge of 5 minute bloods! We offer a busy, fast paced blood service and require a keen and enthusiastic individual to join our dynamic team, working alongside our experienced Nursing team. Experience of working in General Practice and experience of working with EMIS is desirable.

The successful candidate must be flexible, a good team worker, used to working under pressure, have excellent interpersonal and IT skills and be able to communicate effectively with patients, carers and other team members.

The position will be part-time, 12 hours per week and we can be flexible. (However if working after 3pm, it will require the post holder transporting the bloods to the Microbiology lab at Maidstone Hospital at the end of the shift)

The post holder will work at both our main site at Len Valley Practice and our branch surgery, The Glebe Medical Practice in Harrietsham.

We expect the post holder to participate in any training programme implemented by the practice as part of this employment and as part of their professional development.

Job Description

Title: Phlebotomist

Responsible To: Lead Nurse

Main Purpose of the Post:

To provide Phlebotomy services to the Practice population.

Supported by the nursing team within the Practice, the Phlebotomist will be responsible for delivering a phlebotomy service within the boundaries of their role and in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, compliant with laboratory standards, whilst adhering to infection control standards. They will focus upon providing a safe phlebotomy service, supporting patients, taking routine blood tests from different age groups, as requested by clinicians, maintaining clinically accurate records and managing own phlebotomy clinics. They will work collaboratively with the general Practice team to meet the needs of patients.

Training will be provided to become a part of our flu campaign, delivering flu vaccinations to our Practice population.

Duties & Responsibilities of the Post:

Main Duties:

• Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and gaining consent for the collection of a blood sample

• Collection of sample(s) of blood in accordance with training and procedures

• Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers

• Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity

• Checking patient identification against GP / nurse request and confirming with patient whenever possible

• Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with Practice procedure

• Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion

• Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff

• Notifying the GP / Nurse of any significant patient issues

• Liaising with and assisting members of the administrative team

• Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care

• Support and participate in shared learning within the Practice

Confidentiality: Ensure that all confidentiality, data protection and information governance policies and guidelines are followed and strictly adhered to, reporting any infringements to the appropriate person immediately.

The business operates between the hours of 0800 – 1830 hours Monday to Friday with extended hours on Monday 1830 – 2000 as part of PCN cover. There may be the requirement to offer future evening and weekend work as and when the business need increases.
