Triage GP vacancy

St Mary’s Surgery Southampton

St Marys Surgery is a well-established and large inner-city practice serving some of the most diverse communities in the South of England. Like most GP practices, it is crucial that we work hard to prioritise and triage patient demand and to stream and signpost patients effectively in order to maximise the impact of our finite service resources. We continue to develop and refine our clinical model and have a growing multi-professional team including Advanced Practitioners, Clinical Pharmacists and a range of other skilled practitioners. Matching patient need to appropriate service response is key.

To achieve this we have adopted a “Triage Coordinator” or TC model whereby an experienced member of our GP team undertakes an oversight function – providing our well-trained reception team with clinical advice for signposting or booking patients, providing on-hand supervision for our ANP and other non-medical workforce, providing initial review of patients via telephone to inform triage outcomes and generally overseeing the “front end” of our GP practice urgent and on-day operations. Our TC may occasionally review patients face to face to inform initial assessment.

We are seeking to recruit experienced GPs with the confidence and capability to manage risk and wherever possible ensure that patients with more acute needs are managed on-the-day, with effective assessment, advice, onward sign-posting or referral – minimising the need for further follow-up unless this is absolutely necessary.

We currently have vacancies for up-to 4 sessions per week of TC cover within the practice. We figure this opportunity may be of interest to senior GPs with portfolio careers and interests, confidence and experience in duty or urgent care services. We would ideally look to recruit GPs looking for salaried positions but would also be interested in engaging in more regular locum arrangements – perhaps with the possibility of this developing into a more permanent role. We prioritise staff wellbeing and development and offer regular scheduled training and supervision. Specific training on our protocols, local pathways, services and processes will be provided for this role.
