Practice Profile
Wellington Town
Wellington is a small, friendly, market town situated near Taunton and is close to the beautiful Blackdown Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) which provides a variety of outdoor activities and nature opportunities. The town has good transport links being close to junction 26 of the M5 motorway. There is easy access to Bristol and Exeter, Exmoor national park, and the north and south coasts. Wellington is well served by schools and sixth form colleges, both state and private. A good quality of life is available here.
The population of this area reflects the Somerset average mix of age and deprivation which gives the practice a varied and interesting range of health issues to manage.
The Practice
Wellington Medical Centre, a well-established GP practice with a history dating back to the 1970s, is a stable, thriving, vibrant and sociable GP practice providing primary care services under a General Medical Services (GMS) contract. We currently have 9 GP Partners and 5 salaried GPs
The practice is semi-rural with a growing list size of over 15,800 patients drawn from Wellington and the surrounding area. The majority of patients live in Somerset although a small proportion live in the neighbouring county of Devon.
The practice provides services from a modern, spacious, purpose-built premises owned by the GP Partners. Constructed in 2010 the premises are located in a parkland setting on the edge of the town of Wellington providing a pleasant working environment.
The Practice is forward thinking and adaptable but runs a traditional list-based system with a strong ethos of continuity of care. We operate a GP Buddy system to manage the work of absent GPs. The practice holds a whole team “huddle” each morning and a mid-morning whole team coffee break. Face to face appointments are at 15 minute intervals and all GPs have protected Administration time each day.
Working alongside the GPs is a wide-ranging team including Primary Care Practitioners (Paramedic trained), a Musculoskeletal Practitioner, Practice Nurses (1 currently training as an Advanced Care Practitioner), Healthcare Assistants and a large Administrative Support Team.
Wellington Medical Centre is a training practice currently hosting both GP Trainees and Medical Students. We are currently rated “Excellent” for our training activities.
Also, within the medical centre we are very fortunate to have a team of Health Visitors and regular clinics are also provided to our patients by the community Midwifery team. Co-located on the Wellington Medical Centre site is a pharmacy leased by the GP Partners to Boots and an NHS Dental Access Centre leased by the GP Partners to Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.
As a general philosophy the aim of the Partners and staff is to preserve the best elements of a traditional style of personal, friendly, accessible family medical practice based on teamwork, which can react quickly and sensitively to daily demands, with well-equipped premises and efficient systems for prevention and planned care of chronic conditions. The practice provides a comprehensive range of Primary Care services to its patients and also provides GP services to a local forensic psychiatric hospital.
When inspected by the CQC in May 2018, the practice received a “Good” rating. The Practice has historically achieved highly in relation to QOF. The success of the practice is also evidenced by its ability to attract new patients.

Collaborative Working
Wellington Medical Centre is a member of Taunton Deane West Primary Care Network (PCN) which also includes our neighbouring practices, Luson Surgery (also located in Wellington) and Lister House Surgery in Wiveliscombe. Through the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS) element of the PCN Directed Enhanced Service (DES), the Practice is well supported by a team of PCN staff which includes Pharmacists, First Contact Musculoskeletal Practitioners, Occupational Therapist, Children’s Mental Health Liaison Worker a Complex Care/PCN Lead Nurse, Care Co-ordinators, and a number of social prescribers including a Village Agent and a team of Health coaches. In addition to this the PCN also employs a manager. The PCN workforce plan going forward expands the range of roles employed to include a Paramedic and Pharmacist Technician.
Information Technology
The practice embraces technology. We use EMIS Web as our clinical software, and also for our appointments and workflow system. The Practice uses Patient Triage as our online consultation system and we also use AccuRx video consultation, SMS messaging, batch messaging and self book. Patients are encouraged to use the NHS App.
The practice is paper light with nearly all correspondence between the practice and local hospitals now taking place electronically. There is a practice intranet for all shared documents and resources. Further patient orientated initiatives include online access for appointment booking, ordering repeat prescriptions and accessing medical records, touch screen patient arrivals and a recently updated website.
