Aims

Aimed at GPs, ANPs & Allied Health Professionals in Primary Care. This session aims to give delegates a greater understanding of lesion diagnostics using a dermoscope

Objectives

The dermoscope (some users prefer the term dermatoscope) is a portable, hand-held skin microscope which is now well proven as an invaluable tool in skin lesion recognition. It is often called 'The dermatologist's stethoscope' and this is a fitting analogy because it is a simple piece of kit, deployed after history taking, inspection and palpation have been done, which gathers additional clinical data leading to better diagnostic decisions. Some training is required.

To become a real expert with the dermoscope takes time and mentoring, but clinical trials have shown that GPs can significantly improve their ability to recognise skin cancers after just one day of training. The Primary Care Dermatology Society has long advocated that GPs and practice nurses should use dermoscopy primarily to support the diagnosis of everyday benign lesions (warts, banal naevi, haemangiomas etc) to avoid patients with such lesions being sent needlessly on cancer pathways.

The presentation assumes no prior knowledge of dermoscopy but will be best appreciated by learners who are familiar with the basics of skin lesion recognition, ideally having attended the earlier session on 9th November. Dr Hayes teaches the 'Chaos and Clues' method for interpreting dermoscopic images, which is well validated and the easiest method to teach and learn. A PDF for private study will be freely available to learners on request.

Trainer

Dr Stephen Hayes was a GP in Southampton for 20 years, one of the first GPwSIs and since 2013 has worked at the Royal South Hants hospital exclusively doing skin lesion diagnostics. He has taught dermatology for the last two decades all over the British Isles, independently and with the PCDS, BMA, International Dermoscopy Society, the Primary Care Surgical Association of Ireland, and for UHS. Stephen has travelled to Australia and New Zealand to learn from expert skin cancer GPs there and is active with the International Dermoscopy Society. He blogs about skin lesion diagnostics here and has an e-book out on Amazon Kindle 'Skin Cancer Diagnosis Made Easy'. He is retiring soon so this might be the last chance to hear him present!

We will be recording this session and it will be available, at a cost of £20 for members of Wessex LMCs and £45 for non members, for a limited time by clicking here

If you attend the course the recording will be available after the event, free of charge on this web page NB: you must have been marked down as attending, and be logged on to the website to view the file.

Subsidised Booking Options

Wessex LMCs hold a number of funds for different organisations, specifically for training purposes.  By using these funds, many of our 'members' are able to access training without direct recourse to Practice Funds.  It is important that you select the appropriate funding option in the booking process, so that we can assign your booking to the correct funding stream, and here is some guidance to help you decide.

All GPs and Members of Staff working within GP Practices in the Wessex LMCs' catchment area

Please use this option if you are working in a Practice in the Wessex LMC catchment area and do not fit into one of the other options on offer.  This option may, or may not, have a cost attached.

BaNES Staff

Bath & North East Somerset (BaNES) Practices have given Wessex LMCs some of their training budget, to be used for their staff (not GPs) only.  To access this funding you must be working in a Practice in Bath or North East Somerset and not be a GP.

BSW Staff - Clinical

We are delighted that, thanks in part to the BSW (BaNES, Swindon & Wiltshire) Training Hub, and part the NHSE Investment in Continual Professional Development, certain eligible roles such as Nurses and Allied Health Professionals, working in Swindon and Wiltshire Practices, are able to attend this course fully funded.  Please see the full list of Included and Excluded staff in the table below.   Please do not use this option if: 1) You are in a role 'Excluded from the Scheme' (see table below)  2) You are a GP.  3) You work in any role, except GP, in Bath or North East Somerset; please use the 'BaNES Staff' option above instead.

You can see more information about the scheme by clicking on this link: BSW Eligible Staff @ August 2022

Eligible Staff BSW Table @ July 2022

Non Members

Please use this option if you are not working in a Practice in the Wessex LMCs catchment area.

NB: Unfortunately, some of your colleagues have previously booked places and not attended, preventing others from doing so.  It must be stressed that the above options are not ‘FREE’ they are funded from NHS monies, all of which must be accounted for.  If, therefore, you select one of these subsidised options, and do not attend, or fail to cancel more than 2 weeks in advance, you will be charged the full member delegate fee.  To cancel your booking please email: Lead@wessexlmcs.org.uk at least 14 days before the event date.
