Introduction
This one-day course is open to all HCAs who are currently working in practice and who are looking to develop their skills in vaccinations. It is best practice to become proficient and competent in flu vaccinations before attending pneumococcal/shingles training due to the additional learning achieved through that programme, but it should not be considered a pre-requisite to attending any of the courses, so long as you have robust mentorship and support within your organisation.
It is recommended that only HCAs who have achieved education and training to Level Three of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF)4 or equivalent in England and Wales, with at least 2 years’ experience as an HCA, should be considered for training in vaccine administration. The HCA must be regularly updated on resuscitation and anaphylaxis training.
This immunisation training course has been approved by PHE/NHS England South West Screening and Immunisation Team as conforming to the national minimum standards for immunisation training
Aims:
The course will cover:
- The role of the HCA in extended practice
- What is Pernicious anemia; the symptoms, causes and treatment
- Monitoring patients with B12 deficiency
- Prescribing legislation for administration / legal issues / PSD
- Record keeping/documentation/communication with patients/capacity/consent
- What is Pneumococcal disease?
- Injection administration and techniques including practical session
- Understand the legal implications of extended practice
- Be aware of NMC guidance for medicine management
- Demonstrate safe storage and handling of vaccines including infection control
- Undertake a risk assessment of the patient prior to immunisation
- Perform the procedure and consultation with confidence and competence
The course will provide:
- a competency framework to use with the mentor at your Practice,
- a protocol for the administration of B12 injections and Pneumococcal vaccinations by HCAs
- an example of a Patient Specific Directive (PSD) for prescribing and legal purposes.
All of these documents will need to be downloaded from the J2S website. NB: You will be given the password to access these in an email reminder 1 week before the course.
Trainers
Julia Judd qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1989 and has enjoyed a diverse career working in the emergency department and acute surgical wards before settling on a career in primary care. Since 1994 Julia has worked in General Practice, building her portfolio of skills to include practice nursing and management of long term conditions. As her career developed she later extended her role becoming a nurse practitioner and independent prescriber.
During this time Julia has worked as a Clinical Matron for health and well-being across both primary care and adult mental health services, introducing physical health educational programmes for mental health clinicians and developed training modules for NVQ qualifications specific to mental health. This innovative role culminated in a prestigious Nursing Times award in 2008 and a further nomination in 2009.
Julia continues to work as a Nurse Practitioner in a large inner city practice in Portsmouth City, maintaining her own professional skills and acknowledging the increasing demands and burden placed on Primary Care services.
Julia OMara qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1989, and has experience in many fields of nursing and teaching.
Julia has been working in Primary care in 1994 where she developed skills in practice nursing, long term conditions, first contact, history taking and assessment skills and independent nurse prescribing.
Past experience includes working within the NHS as a Modern Matron for General Practice under Solent NHS Trust developing clinical guidelines, protocols and policies, having an instrumental role in clinical governance and promoting high standards of care. As a modern matron Julia was a member of the Infection control advisory group and worked with practices to identify priority areas for CQC and evidence for quality patient care.
Currently Julia has a leading role as The Nurse Advisor for Portsmouth City Clinical Commissioning Group. This role involves listening to the views of the nurses in the city and looking at ways to improve services and delivery of care. At a strategic level Julia manages and chairs the Professional Practice Nurse Forum, co-chairs the Non-Medical Prescriber’s Forum and has an instrumental role in practice nurse education and development through TARGET.

Subsidised Booking Options
Wessex LMCs hold a number of funds for different organisations, specifically for training purposes. By using these funds, many of our 'members' are able to access training without direct recourse to Practice Funds. It is important that you select the appropriate funding option in the booking process, so that we can assign your booking to the correct funding stream, and here is some guidance to help you decide.
All GPs and Members of Staff working within GP Practices in the Wessex LMCs' catchment area
Please use this option if you are working in a Practice in the Wessex LMC catchment area and do not fit into one of the other options on offer. This option may, or may not, have a cost attached.
BaNES Staff
Bath & North East Somerset (BaNES) Practices have given Wessex LMCs some of their training budget, to be used for their staff (not GPs) only. To access this funding you must be working in a Practice in Bath or North East Somerset and not be a GP.
Non Members
Please use this option if you are not working in a Practice in the Wessex LMCs catchment area.
NB: Unfortunately, some of your colleagues have previously booked places and not attended, preventing others from doing so. It must be stressed that the above options are not ‘FREE’ they are funded from NHS monies, all of which must be accounted for. If, therefore, you select one of these subsidised options, and do not attend, or fail to cancel more than 2 weeks in advance, you will be charged the full member delegate fee. To cancel your booking please email: Lead@wessexlmcs.org.uk at least 14 days before the event date.
